For a long time, Image Alt tags were just those words that showed up when an image did not load on a page. With faster internet and better servers, why does that matter now?
Image Alt tags are used for more than just slow images – notably by search engines and screen-readers. Search engines use those tags to determine where your site shows up on their search results. Screen-readers, often used by people that are vision-impaired, use the Image Alt tag to describe what is happening in a picture.
If you don’t have your Image Alts filled in, you could be losing out on SEO.
Or even sued for not being ADA-compliant.
And, unless you’ve been writing perfectly descriptive Image Alt tags since the day you started your site, you probably have a few (or a few thousand) images that don’t have any Alt tag at all right now.
